An Herbalist’s Journey
By Stephanie Jason
“Build me a house from the fauna, the flora, and I will build upon us a timeless journey.” Violetx
Just over one year ago, I embarked on a miraculous journey to become a certified Master Herbalist. It began in late 2013, when a friend invited me to attend a beginner’s cold process soap making class. Having had no prior experience making anything from scratch, let alone soap, I entered Green Lotus Studios having no clue the profound awakening this class would stir within me. Mother nature was calling, and I answered the phone.
Immediately I was captivated by the friendship and fun atmosphere of the classes, and simply became hooked. I was eager to learn more having a thirst for wisdom rooted within the plant world, something I had never explored until now. This began my journey reconnecting with Mother Nature, and bearing witness to the extraordinary bounty she gives to each and everyone of us. Indeed Earth has a cornucopia of healing gifts to nourish our body, mind, and yes, Soul. Earth (Gaia) is the Divine Mother birthing for all life on her vessel, the multitude of gifts we need for survival and well-being. As I learned in my journey at Green Lotus Studios, all answers exist within the natural world, and to become a Master Herbalist is to connect with Gaia. I am grateful to Donna for the wisdom she has bestowed to me, and the depths by which this has positively impacted my life, and in turn my family as well.
From beginning herbalism, to intermediate, to master, each phase of the process provides new and deeper understanding of the power of herbs, nutrition, and the natural world. What I believe I have gained the most from this experience is a sense of self-empowerment. Knowing that I truly understand how nutrition and herbs positively impact our overall health and wellbeing, and most importantly, being able to use this knowledge to support a good quality of life for myself, and family.
Throughout the master herbalism certification process I’ve learned physiology, botany, herbal practices, compounding and herbal formulations, herbal ethics and business practices, aromatherapy and its applications, nutrition, and of course applying all of this knowledge to alleviate illness, disease and strengthen the body and mind.
My simple message to anyone considering this path is this, ”What are you waiting for? If I can do it, so can you.” I, and my fellow master herbalism classmates, truly have become a “Sisterhood of Herbalists”, and although each of our experience in becoming certified has been unique, we have loved every minute of it.
Do you need more motivation? Well, here is what my fellow classmates have to say about their journey in becoming a certified Master Herbalist.
Kathy “I have always believed Mother Nature provides us with everything we need, and I wanted to share this information with everyone. I went from sitting at a desk doing IT work, to getting certified and becoming an herbalist. It changed a lot of my life for the better, and I’ve incorporated herbs into my daily life. The process is truly exciting, and our class is amazing. Our class has a great synergy, and Donna is very knowledgeable. A pearl of wisdom to anyone seeking this path is simply to keep an open mind. As Hippocrates, the Greek philosopher believed… you are what your eat.
“Let food be thy medicine...” - Hippocrates
Pam “I originally decided to become an herbalist to get my children off of medications, and give them healthy options. I then decided to finish the entire course. For me, the experience has been challenging, but I feel more confident with the natural world. I now think of ways to make my own products, and I read labels and understand them! I would absolutely recommend this course to anyone. The knowledge you get, and knowing what to put into your body that is good for you, is so important.”
Heather “I enjoy working with herbs and wanted the hands on experience to go with my studies. My experience has been enjoyable and it has expanded my holistic view of life and lifestyle. Meeting people of like mind and persuasion is one of the best experiences. I thoroughly enjoyed interacting with people who share my common interests in herbalism. I would recommend this class to anyone who is compelled towards herbalism and a natural lifestyle.”
Jennifer “I decided to become a master herbalist for my health problems and my family. I have not had good experiences with the medical community, and using plants for health just makes sense. Something Donna said to me early on resonated with me, she said, “Mother nature has put a plant here to take care of every human”. It’s an exciting time to be in herbalism as we live in a global community now, and have access to herbs all over the world. I find this very exciting. Let’s face it, herbalism works, and it has helped me, and my family. Since the age of 21, I used to have migraines 3 to 4 times a week, and I started drinking Kombucha, and my migraines have stopped! This is just a small example of how master herbalism has impacted me personally. Green Lotus Studios is my favorite place on the planet. It’s a place of healing, community and huge amounts of knowledge.”
Melissa“Becoming a certified master herbalist has been a progressive journey for me. It started a year ago and I came to a soap making class with my mother. I was diagnosed with hypoglycemic episodes, and the Doctor told me to simply “eat peanut butter crackers,”… what a joke. I was interested in much more; to learn real nutrition, understand health, and then make healthy choices. Being with Donna and her approach to learning herbalism is great. It’s about balance, and Donna teaches herbalism in a balanced way. So… I decided to get certified just for me, and this is something I can do for myself.”
A final thought, if you decide to embark on this journey, I promise you will cultivate a deep knowledge of the plant world, and in doing so, humble yourself with Gaia. So remember to have fun and let your joy sparkle. Listen … you will hear the wisdom of the forest, the giggle of the mushroom, and the song of the Lotus.
